Mark and Kathy Custead, both nurses, married in 1982 and started their American Dream. The couple bought a home in the Chatsworth district of LA where they stayed busy working and raising a son and a daughter. Because nurses see so much illness every day, it’s the type of profession that requires a degree of denial about death and illness. Despite this mindset and concerns about the expense, Kathy agreed to a life insurance proposal for the couple when suggested by their insurance agent. Delivered to the two in early March, Mark was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer by the end of the month. He passed away six weeks later. Without Mark’s policy, Kathy and her family’s options would not have included staying in their home, college and the chance to grieve.
